The Cuillin hills of Skye

The romantic Misty Isle, the Winged Isle, Skye (Kilmuir Park and Strathgorm) is well known for its scenery, mountains, history, castles, distilleries, legends and people.

After touring the island you can return to the mainland via the bridge where, at Kyle of Lochalsh, you can take the scenic train ride eastwards to Inverness. Or you can drive north through the pictureque village of Plockton into Wester Ross and the Northern Highlands. Alternatively you can head south via Eilean Donan Castle, Glen Shiel and Invergarry to Fort William, or leave Skye via the ferry to Mallaig.

The Road To The Isles, the A830, travels between Fort William to Mallaig, following the railway line which has a steam train running at certain times. Halfway along, at Glenfinnan, is the monument to the Jacobite followers of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 uprising.

Fort William (Rustic View and Lawriestone) sits below the bulk of Ben Nevis, at 4,404 feet, Britain's highest mountain. There are a number of exhibitions and visitor centres in Fort William - Highland Mysteryworld and Treasures of the Earth (a geological exhibition) amongst them.

This whole area is central for exploring the wild and remote regions of Morar, Moidart and Ardnamurchan, for climbing and hillwalking on the many mountains and, in winter, ski-ing on Nevis Range and at Glencoe.

Further south along the shores of Loch Linnhe is the inlet of Loch Leven, now spanned by a bridge but years ago crossed by a ferry, to Ballachulish (Home Farm and Ardno House) where the road divides. The A828 goes right, along the coast, and the A82 leads inland through Glencoe, site of the infamous massacre, and popular with walkers and climbers, before heading south-east over the wild and beautiful Rannoch Moor.
