4 and 5 Star Accommodation Scottish Tourist Board Grading

B&Bs participating in the Grading scheme are visited annually, sometimes on an incognito overnight stay, by the very demanding STB inspectors.

Awards may be 1,2,3,4 or 5 Stars. The STB bases its assessment on quality, not on size or range of facilities and the stars can be equated in the following way:-

Exceptional, world-class Excellent Very good Good Fair, acceptable

The inspectors sample the warmth of welcome, the quality of food and service, the hospitality, the comfort and condition of the accommodation and award marks out of ten in each of over 40 different categories.

Only if the B&B obtains 84-92% of possible marks will the Four Star grade be awarded and B&B owners can be proud of having received this Excellent rating. A very few may achieve a Five Star rating if truly exceptional.
