This beautifully restored Georgian town house is situated in the old part of this artists' colony, near the picturesque harbour. Renowned for excellent cuisine and luxurious accommodation, Baytree House is the perfect base for touring the south-west corner of Scotland or taking a relaxing short break.

The house has a huge drawing room on the first floor with an open fire for those cold winter nights. This room is lovely to have after dinner coffee in or just to enjoy that book you have always longed to read for ages.

We have 3 charmingly appointed bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities:

  • two twin rooms (one on the ground floor)
  • one double room.

All rooms have colour TV, tea/coffee making facilities, clock radio, shoe cleaning equipment, iron and ironing board.

Honeymooners or just the romantics amongst you might like to know that we have a four poster and for those on honeymoon there is the added bonus of a bottle of champagne!

Breakfast is a great start to the day here. The menu consists of scrambled eggs made with cream and served with Creetown smoked salmon, fennel and other little extras. We also use an old recipe for the traditional Clootie Dumpling which we serve with a full Scottish breakfast, or you can try smoked kippers.

Dinner is something very special at Baytree House. All the food is home made to ensure that the standard is very high. Robert grows most of our vegetables and potatoes in the garden - a hobby which has developed into an obsession! Occasionally you will get to try his asparagus when it is in season. Be here in May or November and you might find artichokes on the menu. Last year was excellent for home-grown strawberries, so let's hope this year will be even better. All other produce is bought locally and we offer fresh fish and scallops straight from the harbour, as well as high quality local meats. Vegetarian options also available on the menu. One guest wrote in our visitors book: 'Probably the best cook in Scotland!' Why not give Baytree a try and see for yourself? Please feel free to bring your own wine or other alcoholic drinks to have with your meal.

Since opening in February 1997, Jackie and Robert have worked hard both on the house and in the lovely garden. The garden features a pond filled with lots of marginals and surrounded by old stone walls. You can sit here at night and watch the fish feeding, or relax on the sundeck by yet another small pond. There are lots of shrubs and perennials in this interesting little corner of the old town.

Heritage

Kirkcudbright and surrounding areas are steeped in history. There are lots of castles and abbeys to visit as well as National Trust houses and gardens. Ask the boatman to take you over to Threave Castle, stronghold of the Black Douglas, or visit the magnificent ruined fortress of Caerlaverock, now in the care of Historic Scotland.
Follow the Celtic Cross signs along the fascinating Solway Coast Heritage Trail and you will be sure to see many places of historical interest.

The Arts

Kirkcudbright is well known for its artists, so a visit to Broughton House, the home of Hornel, is a must. Also in the High Street is the former home of Jessie M. King and the Tolbooth Gallery. There are now lots of other little galleries where local artists have set up their own businesses.
If you like browsing around book shops, then drive over to Wigtown, known as 'The Book Town of Scotland'.
The area is always being sought out for films. 'The Wicker Man' was filmed outside this very front foor, as was 'Thirty Nine Steps'.

The Great Outdoors

Kirkcudbright is within easy driving distance of at least 6 good golf courses. It also has lots of safe sandy beaches. You are welcome to borrow our two bicycles if you would like to leisurely explore the local vicinity. There are also local facilities for hill walking, bowls, tennis, fishing and boat trips for sea angling.

Thanks to its situation on the Gulf Stream, this area has very mild winters and therefore some of the gardens are quite outstanding. Palm trees grow easily here, as do most South African plants. If you want to buy some rare plants, this is the gardener's dream and we can point you in the direction of many good nurseries.

We take great pride in looking after our guests and want them to come back year after year.
